Holo scratches are among the most visually impactful imperfections a Pokémon card can carry. Under direct light, even fine surface scratches on a holo or reverse holo card become immediately visible — and graders notice. At The Mint Workshop, holo scratch repair is one of our most technically demanding services, and one we approach with the care that foil surfaces require.
Not every scratch can be fully corrected. But with the right surface correction technique, many can be significantly reduced — restoring the card's reflective quality and improving its presentation under grading-room lighting.
What Is Holo Scratch Repair?
Holo scratch repair is the precision correction of surface scratches on a card's foil or holo layer. Unlike scratches on a standard card surface, holo scratches disrupt the reflective foil beneath the card's coating — making them particularly visible and particularly penalized by graders.
The process requires a detailed understanding of how different holo finishes are constructed — from vintage Wizards of the Coast holos to modern Scarlet & Violet textures — and how surface correction can be applied without further disrupting the foil layer beneath.
What Types of Holo Scratches Can Be Improved?
- Fine surface scratches — Light scratches in the card's top coating that scatter light and reduce holo clarity. These typically respond best to surface correction.
- Handling scratches — Scratches introduced through repeated handling, sleeve insertion, or storage contact. Common on played or lightly used cards.
- Swirl patterns — Circular or directional scratch patterns from improper cleaning or wiping. Often improvable through targeted surface correction.
- Reverse holo surface marks — Scratches on the holo background of reverse holo cards, treated with methods appropriate for that finish type.
Transparency note: Deep scratches that have penetrated through the card's coating into the foil layer itself have limited or no correction potential. We assess every card individually and will always provide an honest evaluation before any work begins.
Before & After
Holo scratch correction is best demonstrated visually. Every card we treat is photographed under raking light at intake and upon completion — capturing the scratch pattern before and after treatment so you can see exactly what changed.

Our Holo Scratch Repair Process
- Intake & Surface Analysis — Your card is examined under magnification and raking light to map the scratch pattern, depth, and distribution across the holo surface.
- Finish Identification — We identify the specific holo finish type — vintage, modern, full art, textured, or special finish — and select the appropriate correction method.
- Surface Correction — Correction is performed in a controlled environment using materials and techniques calibrated for foil card surfaces. Each pass is assessed under magnification.
- Post-Correction Review — The card is re-examined under raking light and compared against intake photography. We evaluate the result against grading presentation standards.
- Documentation & Return — Before and after images are compiled and returned with your card in archival-safe packaging.
Turnaround Time
Holo scratch repair typically completes within 7–12 business days from intake confirmation. Rush processing is available. Complex cases or cards with multiple finish types may require additional assessment time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can holo scratches be fully removed?
Fine surface scratches can often be reduced significantly — in some cases to near-invisibility under normal viewing conditions. Deeper scratches that have penetrated the foil layer are generally not correctable. We will always tell you what is realistically achievable for your specific card.
Does holo scratch repair work on all Pokémon card types?
We work with all Pokémon card holo finishes, including vintage Base Set holos, reverse holos, full art cards, rainbow rares, and modern special illustration rares. Each finish type is assessed and treated individually — there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Will surface correction affect the card's holo pattern?
When performed correctly, surface correction addresses the coating above the foil layer without disrupting the holo pattern beneath. We assess the risk for each card individually and will flag any elevated concern before proceeding.
Is holo scratch repair considered card alteration?
No. Surface correction of natural wear is not alteration under PSA or BGS guidelines. We do not add or remove material in a way that misrepresents the card's condition. Our work is fully compliant with grading company submission standards.
