Pokémold. Spotted. Removed.
Tiny brown or black specks around the face or border of a card — collectors call it "Pokémold." It's one of the most common things we see on cards that have spent time in storage, and it cleans off.
Start Your RestorationWhat is Pokémold?
"Pokémold" is the hobby's nickname for small brown, black or gray specks that show up on cards after they've been exposed to moisture or stored badly. The specks are often scattered around the card's surface and borders, and they're easy to mistake for print dots or dirt at first glance.
It shows up most on cards that lived in basements, attics, garages, closets or old binders — anywhere damp air could reach them over time.
How to spot it
Tiny specks
Pin-sized brown or black dots, usually in clusters rather than one big mark.
Around the edges
Often concentrated near borders and corners, where air and moisture reach first.
On the surface
Under a bright light, the specks sit on the card's surface rather than being printed into it.
Musty collection
A binder or box that smells musty is a good sign other cards in it may have specks too.
Don't scrub it
- No water or wet wipes. Moisture can leave stains and make the card wavy.
- No erasers or fingernails. Rubbing can dull the gloss and scratch the holo.
- No household cleaners. They can damage inks and the card's coating.
Pokémold is easy for us to clean off — but it's also easy to damage a card trying to do it at home. Sleeve the card, move it somewhere dry, and leave the cleaning to us.
How we clean it
Cleaning is part of every restoration. We remove Pokémold, dirt and grime safely, then take care of anything else on the card we can fix:
- Warped and curled cards flattened — often found alongside Pokémold, since both come from moisture
- Light holo scratches
- Creases and dents
- Lifted edges and delamination
We can't fix whitening, chipping, missing paper or water stains.
Preventing it next time
- Store cards somewhere cool and dry, off the floor and away from exterior walls.
- Keep valuable cards in sleeves and top loaders.
- Check old binders and boxes now and then, especially after humid summers.
Pokémold FAQ
Can Pokémold be removed from Pokémon cards?
Yes. It's extremely common, and we clean it off as part of our restoration service.
What causes brown spots on Pokémon cards?
They usually come from moisture and poor storage — damp rooms, old binders and boxes kept in basements, attics or garages.
Will Pokémold spread to my other cards?
Cards stored in the same damp conditions often show it together. Move your collection somewhere dry and check the cards around any you find.
Does Pokémold hurt a card's grade?
Surface specks take away from a card's presentation, so cleaning them off before grading helps the card look its best.
