At The Mint Workshop, our card cleaning service removes surface debris safely and precisely, using methods developed specifically for trading card materials.

Cleaning isn’t sold as a stand-alone service: it’s part of every restoration we do, alongside the structural and surface work your card needs. Whether you're preparing a card for PSA submission or simply want it at its cleanest, the process is methodical, non-destructive, and documented.

What Is Professional Card Cleaning?

Professional card cleaning is the careful removal of surface contaminants from a trading card without damaging its finish, print layer, or structural integrity. It is not a DIY process — improper cleaning can introduce micro-scratches, lift the surface coating, or leave residue that worsens a card's condition.

At The Mint Workshop, every cleaning begins with a magnified assessment of the card's surface. We identify the type and extent of contamination before selecting the appropriate cleaning method.

What We Remove

• Fingerprints and skin oils — Among the most common surface contaminants, particularly on holo cards where oils are highly visible under light.
• Dust and airborne debris — Particles that settle on card surfaces during storage or handling, removed without abrasion.
• Adhesive residue — Sticker residue, tape marks, and similar contaminants reduced where the surface allows, using non-destructive methods.
• Environmental film — Oxidation, humidity residue, and general surface haze addressed through targeted cleaning.
• Light surface debris — Eraser particles, paper dust, and similar material carefully removed.

Important: Cleaning addresses surface contamination only. It can’t remove ink, marker or water stains, and it doesn’t fix whitening — whitening is paper and ink loss, and we don’t add ink. Scratches, creases and dents are handled in the same restoration.

Surface contamination is often most visible under raking light or UV inspection. Our intake photography captures the card's condition before cleaning begins, and completion photography documents the result — giving you a clear, documented record of the work performed.

Our Cleaning Process

1. Intake & Surface Assessment — Your card is received and examined under magnification and controlled lighting to identify all surface contaminants.
2. Method Selection — We select the appropriate cleaning approach based on the card's finish type, contamination profile, and condition.
3. Precision Cleaning — Cleaning is performed in a controlled, dust-free environment using materials safe for trading card surfaces.
4. Post-Clean Inspection — The card is re-examined under magnification to confirm all targeted contamination has been addressed without surface impact.
5. Return — Your card ships back to you, with return shipping insured by The Mint Workshop. Your submission tracker shows its photos and where your order is.

Turnaround Time

Cleaning is part of every restoration, so it follows the standard turnaround: 24–30 business days from when your cards arrive and are checked in. Need it sooner? Expedited service is $49.99 per card with a 5–7 business day turnaround (not available for creased cards).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cleaning safe for holo cards?

Yes, when performed correctly. Holo surfaces require specific handling to avoid micro-scratching or disrupting the foil layer. Our cleaning methods are selected based on the card's specific finish type — holo, reverse holo, full art, and textured surfaces are all handled differently.

Will cleaning improve my PSA grade?

Surface contamination can negatively affect a card's presentation under grading-room lighting. Removing it can improve how the card presents, but grading outcomes are never guaranteed. We make no grade promises.

Can you clean vintage cards?

Yes. Vintage cards — particularly Base Set and early Wizards of the Coast era cards — often carry decades of handling residue. We have experience cleaning cards from all eras with appropriate care for their age and finish.

What if my card needs more than cleaning?

If your card has surface scratches, creases or dents beyond contamination, they’re handled in the same restoration. Pricing is per card, set by the card’s declared value rather than by how much work it needs. If something can’t be fixed — whitening, for example — we’ll tell you.
