What Is Trading Card Restoration?

Trading card restoration is the professional process of addressing physical wear, surface damage, and structural imperfections on collectible cards. It is not alteration — restoration works within the card's existing condition to improve its presentation, not to misrepresent its grade.

Every restoration at The Mint Workshop begins with a detailed assessment. We evaluate the card under magnification, document its condition, and determine what can realistically be improved before any work begins.

• Pokémon TCG — All eras from Base Set through modern Scarlet & Violet, including vintage holos, reverse holos, full arts, and special illustration rares.
• Magic: The Gathering — Vintage and modern MTG cards, including foils and special treatments.

What We Can Address

• Surface scratches and scuffs — Holo and non-holo surface marks treated through controlled surface correction.
• Creases and bends — Light to moderate structural deformation addressed through humidity and pressure techniques. Every crease leaves a scar, and graders will almost always see it.
• Edge lifts — Lifted or separating edges can often be improved. Whitening is different: it’s paper and ink loss, and we can’t fix it — we don’t add ink.
• Surface contamination — Fingerprints, dust, adhesive residue, and environmental film safely removed.
• Soft corners — A corner softened by a slight bend can often be improved, as long as it isn’t torn. Corners with chipping or missing paper can’t be rebuilt.

Transparency note: Not all damage is correctable. Severe structural damage or deep creases may have limited restoration potential. We can’t fix whitening (it’s paper and ink loss, and we don’t add ink), chipping or missing paper, water stains, ink or marker, or factory miscuts, and we don’t rebuild cards. We will always provide an honest assessment before work begins.

Our Process

1. Intake & Assessment — Your card is received, photographed, and evaluated under magnification. We document all existing damage before any work begins.
2. Restoration Plan — We determine the appropriate techniques for your card's specific damage profile and card type.
3. Precision Restoration — Work is performed in a controlled environment using professional-grade materials selected for your card's finish and construction.
4. Quality Review — Post-restoration photography is compared against intake images. The card is reviewed against grading presentation standards.
5. Secure Return — Your card ships back to you, with return shipping insured by The Mint Workshop. Your submission tracker shows its photos and where your order is.

Turnaround Time

Standard restoration turnaround is 24–30 business days from when your cards arrive and are checked in. Need it sooner? Expedited service is $49.99 per card with a 5–7 business day turnaround (not available for creased cards). Complex restorations or multi-card submissions may require additional time — we communicate proactively on all timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on non-Pokémon cards?

Yes. While Pokémon is our primary focus, we work with all major trading card formats. Each card type has its own finish characteristics and restoration considerations — we assess every card individually.

Is restoration compliant with PSA, BGS, and CGC guidelines?

We can't speak for the grading companies — each applies its own standards. Our restoration addresses natural wear and surface imperfections within the card's existing condition. We use non-destructive methods only — no trimming, no ink, no recoloring, no varnish. Grading outcomes are not guaranteed, and we make no promise about whether a grading company will detect or note restoration work.

Can you restore multiple cards at once?

Yes. Multi-card submissions are welcome. Each card is assessed and treated individually — we do not apply a one-size-fits-all approach to batch submissions.

How do I know what's achievable for my card?

Every submission begins with a full condition assessment. We document what we find and communicate realistic expectations before any restoration work begins. Pricing is per card, set by the card’s declared value rather than by how much work it needs.
